Tips for Adding Some 'Green' Glamour to Your Decor

You are ready to add some glamour to your decor. You also happen to care about the environment too. You are faced with a dilemma. You don't want to be limited when it comes to how you can spruce up your decor, but you don't want to leave a noticeable carbon footprint in the process. Fortunately, there are some ways to add a little "green glamour" to your decor without sacrificing on style.

Recycled Décor

The great thing about recycled decor is that you are sure to end up with something that is truly unique. Some of the easiest items to make out of recycled materials to add some glamour to your decor include:

• Planters - Just about any item can be turned into a planter. If you're going for glamour, consider using items such as a silver or gold-plated birdcage. Champagne bottles can be turned into charming vases. Even those old bowls you have stored away can become stylish planters.

• Backsplash - The backsplash in your kitchen can become a little more glamorous with recycled colored glass or pieces of colored rock. Dip into that old bottle top collection or gather those leftover tiles from various home improvement projects you have saved up in the basement or attic. The mix and match pieces can become a unique backsplash.

• Lamps - You would be surprised at what you can turn into a lamp. If you are going for glamour, large vases or flower pots make attractive lamps. That fancy container that supposed to be used to hold umbrellas - but is never used for any real purpose - can also work.

'Green' Curtains

Instead of buying new material to create drapes from scratch, gather up material you already have on hand. This could include leftover material from previous sewing projects or old bedspreads, comforters, and blankets. With a little effort, these recycled curtains can look just like curtains made from carefully selected store bought material.

'Green' Pillows

Pillows can easily add some glamour to your existing decor. Gather up leftover sewing materials or purchase some recycled cloth. Take a few old pillows you stuffed away in the closet or tossed onto that old sofa down in the basement. Use either your recycled cloth or material you found around your home to make a new cover for these pillows. The material for inside of your pillows - if you don't have any old pillows laying around the house - can come from the stuffing from old stuffed animals or from packing materials like those Styrofoam packing peanuts.

Yard Sales/Flea Markets

If you're not the do-it-yourself type, spend a day checking out yard sales, garage sales, and flea markets. You just might be surprised at what you can find with a little browsing. Many of the items you'll collect just need a little spruce here and there. Just can even find some rare treasures in near-pristine condition. This is also an excellent way to find some stylish picture frames. If you don't like the art or picture already in the frame, take it out of the frame and replace it with your own art or collection of photos to add some personalized style to your walls.

Auctions

Another great way to add some green glamour to your decor is to spend some time at auctions. Most of the items at auction are in excellent condition. The great thing about auctions is that you are likely to come away with some amazing bargains. Many of the items up for bid are incredibly stylish and will make a great addition to your home. Most of us have that bare spot on the wall or corner space we would like to find fill out anyway. Instead of buying something new, enjoy the thrill of an auction and reduce your carbon footprint at the same time.

You don't have to be Martha Stewart to find some green ways to add some glamour to your decor without sacrificing style or offending Mother Nature. Repurposing existing materials or items or using recycled materials will give you plenty of stylish options to change up your decor. Don't forget about the hidden treasures to be found on eBay. Go ahead and glam up your home with a touch of green!

  1. I love fixing things up! The top of my want to do list though is to take our crib and turn it into a craft table for the kiddos!
